Nicaragua Arrests 8 for Fraud Amid Opposition Criticism

The Nicaraguan prosecutor’s office announced on Friday that eight government officials have been arrested and will face charges of “fraud” and “embezzlement of public funds.” However, opposition groups argue that these arrests are politically motivated, targeting Sandinista members critical of President Daniel Ortega’s administration. According to the prosecutor’s office, which has faced accusations of acting in alignment with Ortega’s directives, the eight individuals remain in preventive detention pending their trial scheduled to begin on September 11. The charges stem from what authorities describe as “serious crimes committed against the public treasury.” Contrary to the official narrative, opposition media outlets operating in exile have reported that the detained officials are actually members of the Sandinista Front. These individuals were part of a WhatsApp group named “La Comuna,” where they allegedly criticized decisions made by Ortega’s government. The group was apprehend...

Costa Rica’s Hitoy Cerere Reserve Welcomes Back Visitors

In celebration of National Parks Month , the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), and the Regional Directorate of the Conservation Area La Amistad Caribe have officially reopened the Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve for tourism and research. This reserve is one of 169 protected wildlife areas in Costa Rica and one of the 14 managed by ACLA-C under SINAC. Located on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica, the reserve spans the La Estrella river basin (89%) and the Sixaola river basin (10.9%) within the Talamanca Mountain Range. The reserve’s lush landscape is predominantly tropical forest, with 99.4% of its territory covered in greenery. Almost the entire reserve is under state control, protecting more than 99% of its expanse. The reopening of Hitoy Cerere is the result of collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, aimed at improving the quality of experiences for students, researchers, and visitors, as well as improving workin...

Costa Rica’s Housing Market Fails to Meet the Needs of Most Households

A new report titled “Balance and Trends in the Housing Sector 2023,” presented by the Costa Rican Association of Engineers and Architects (CFIA) in partnership with the University of Costa Rica (UCR), reveals a stark disparity between current housing prices and the needs of Costa Rican households. The report indicates that nearly 90% of housing solutions are designed to cater to just 30% of households, leaving the majority of the population without affordable housing options. The UCR further highlights that low-income households are among the most severely impacted by the ongoing housing crisis. Specifically, there has been a significant decrease in the delivery of housing vouchers. In 2021, 11,428 housing vouchers were issued; however, this number dropped to 8,369 in 2022 and further declined to 8,222 in 2023. This represents a 36% average decrease compared to 2021, meaning over 7,000 families have lost the opportunity for adequate housing. “Housing is a major concern for citizens...

Costa Rica Wildlife: Predators and Prey in Costa Rica

Image
Most of us spend precious little time in nature. We’ll dip our toes in when we visit a waterfall or go for a hike, but for the most part we live our lives in the human world thinking very little about the huge variety of other creatures that we share this planet with. While we’re sitting in buildings, working, and shopping, there’s another secret world taking place under the cover of the forest. Camera traps are a window into the world of the wild. They show us who’s living in the forest and, if we’re lucky, a little bit about what they’re up to. This window is incredibly small. Of the thousands of acres of forest in Costa Rica, each camera trap shows us what’s happening in an area of a few square meters. After years of camera trapping, I’m still impressed by the number of different species that pass through the view of this small window. Sometimes, when we’re incredibly lucky, we get to see more than an animal walking through the frame of the camera trap, we get to see some animal b...

Costa Rica Caribbean Cuisine Aboard La Katonga in Tortuguero National Park

Imagine eating delicious Caribbean cuisine while floating in a boat, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty and natural wonders of Tortuguero National Park. This unique experience is made possible by “La Katonga,” a restaurant by the Mawamba Group . Unlike other floating restaurants in the country, it is built on two boats that sail the Tortuguero River, allowing visitors to enjoy their meal while being enchanted by the park’s magic. “Costa Rica has a unique gastronomy, full of ingredients, flavors, and stories of entrepreneurs that, combined with the natural beauty of our country, allow people to live a unique and unforgettable experience, even more so on a floating restaurant on the mighty Tortuguero River,” said Ireth Rodriguez, head of promotion at the ICT. Eugenia Jurado, sales manager of Grupo Mawamba, a company founded in the eighties by husband and wife Mauricio Dada and Norma Arrea, explained how this peculiar restaurant works. “La Katonga was constructed on the base of a ...

Rising Dengue Cases in Costa Rica with 25 Children Hospitalized

Dengue continues to pose a significant public health threat in Costa Rica. According to data from the National Children’s Hospital (HNN), 25 children have been hospitalized this year due to dengue-related complications. Marcela Hernández, an infectologist and coordinator of the Hospital’s Epidemiological Surveillance Unit, reported that four additional minors have suffered from severe dengue. “Up to August 21, 193 patients in the Children’s Hospital’s emergency department have tested positive for dengue . Of these, 25 have been hospitalized with warning signs, but fortunately, none have died,” she said. Most of the cases treated involve children aged 5 to 9. There have also been cases among children aged 10 to 14. Children who suffer from severe dengue may experience sequelae, including organ, renal, and hepatic function impairment. “Since the hospital is located in San José, most cases we receive are from this province, but we are also seeing more cases from Alajuela and Heredia,”...

Panama Steps Up Deportations of Migrants Crossing Darién Jungle

Panama deported another 30 Colombian migrants this Saturday who had entered the country through the Darién jungle border, as part of the implementation of a recent agreement with the United States, the government reported. A “deportation flight of migrants who entered irregularly through the Darién jungle” was carried out, stated the Ministry of Security on its X (formerly Twitter) account. Deputy Minister Luis Felipe Icaza specified that “30 Colombians, including 6 high-profile individuals,” were deported. Last Tuesday, the Panamanian government applied the agreement with Washington for the first time, deporting 29 Colombians with criminal records on a charter flight. These individuals also entered the country through the Darién, the inhospitable jungle on the Colombian-Panamanian border, which has become a migration corridor for those heading to the United States. Upon taking office on July 1, President José Raúl Mulino signed a migration agreement with the United States, through ...

How Chinese Automakers Captured 20% of Latin America’s Car Sales

Chilean truck driver Claudio Perez was dubious about his first purchase of a Chinese-made family car two years ago. But the price and quick delivery time convinced him, and now he is a convert. Perez, 47, is one of millions of car buyers in Latin America to have made the shift from US- and Brazilian-built cars to Chinese models in recent years. In 2019, the Asian economic giant sold $2.2 billion worth of cars in the region. Last year, the figure reached $8.5 billion, according to the International Trade Center (ITC), a UN agency. Chinese car sales represented 20 percent of the region’s total in money terms —  ahead of the United States with 17 percent and Brazil with 11 percent. No other market outside Asia now has a larger share of Chinese cars, according to the ITC. “We tend to stigmatize Chinese brands, but no… this one was super good, super good. So I don’t regret buying it,” Perez said of his first purchase, which he said he had expected to be “plastic-like.”   And hi...

Air Pollution in San José Surpasses Mexico City, Raising Alarm Bells

In a shocking revelation, our capital city’s air quality has deteriorated to levels worse than those of Mexico City, long considered one of the most polluted urban areas in Latin America. This alarming news comes as the Defensoría de los Habitantes (Ombudsman’s Office) calls for urgent action to address the growing air pollution crisis in Costa Rica. Recent data shows that the concentration of particulate matter (PM10) in San José’s air has reached a concerning 27.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), significantly higher than Mexico City’s 21.7 µg/m³. These tiny particles, primarily produced by vehicle emissions, factories, and other human activities, pose serious health risks to our population. The gravity of the situation is further underscored by an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development report, which found that a staggering 88% of Ticos are exposed to harmful levels of air pollution. Defensora de los Habitantes, Angie Cruickshank, emphasized the need for collectiv...

Costa Rica’s Talamanca Regulatory Plan Faces Criticism Over Wetland Development

The regulatory plan of the Municipality of Talamanca has faced significant criticism. The plan permits tourism development and the construction of parking lots in areas identified as wetlands by the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) in 2021. Franz Tattenbach, the Minister of Environment and Energy, defended a directive he issued last year, which stated that SINAC would no longer rely on the 2021 study. Instead, he mandated the use of only the State Natural Heritage (PNE) certification for the Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZMT), issued by SINAC in 2017. This earlier certification did not delimit or mark any wetlands. The most concerning aspect of the Coastal Regulatory Plan , approved in September last year by the Municipal Council of Talamanca, is its failure to mark or delimit wetlands. These areas are not included as protected zones, yet tourism development is allowed in locations where wetlands exist. A local resident filed a complaint, leading the Constitutional Court ...

Uber Eats Under Fire: New Costa Rican Bill Aims to Boost Delivery Worker Conditions

The Frente Amplio party presented a new bill that, according to its members, aims to improve the working conditions of delivery drivers. Sofía Guillén, Frente Amplio representative, accused Uber Eats of unilaterally abandoning talks with workers that were intended to improve working conditions. “You cannot treat your workers as if they are second-rate or as if this is the previous century. Your delivery workers are demanding better conditions. They approached you respectfully, with a letter, to request negotiations for improved conditions. It is unacceptable for you to close the door on them,” said Guillén. Among the workers’ requests are payment for tolls and an increase pay in the event of rainy conditions. Delivery workers are also required to give 40% of their salary to the company, significantly reducing their overall earnings. “I am a user, and whenever it rains, they charge you more. I assumed it was because they were giving more money to the delivery person—the one who is g...

The Darién Dilemma: Venezuelan Exodus Continues as Election Hopes Fade

When Nicolás Maduro was proclaimed the winner of the elections, José Ochoa began packing his bags to walk from Colombia to the United States through the Darién jungle. Like other migrants, his hope of returning to Venezuela vanished after the elections. Ochoa, 38, was counting on the opposition’s victory on July 28 to return to his native state of Carabobo (north-central), four years after leaving Venezuela fleeing the economic crisis. But amid allegations of fraud, Maduro was re-elected for a term until 2031, in a country from which more than seven million people have left, according to the UN. Of these, three million have arrived in Colombia, the main recipient. “I’m going to take the road to the United States… I didn’t want to do it but it’s a tough decision,” Ochoa said in Madrid, a municipality near Bogotá. There he lived alone in a small room. When he was visited, days after the elections, he had already sold the bed and a bicycle he used to get to his job in a flower field. H...

Costa Rican Mothers Face Growing Barriers to Employment

The reality for many Costa Rican mothers is far from ideal. From 2018 to 2023, the percentage of mothers in the workforce decreased considerably. Close to 60% of those who are unemployed and stop actively searching for work do so because they must dedicate themselves to domestic responsibilities without any remuneration. Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) shows that 2023 ended with the lowest number of mothers in the workforce since 2018. “It is evident that in 2023, there has been an increase in women citing family responsibilities—such as domestic chores and caregiving—as reasons for not being able to work for pay. This is a growing trend,” explained Natalia Morales, a researcher with the State of the Nation Program (PEN). These findings are corroborated by data from the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) released in January 2024. The analysis identifies family obligations as the primary barrier for women leaving the workforce, followed by old age. In ...

Hidden Dangers in Costa Rica: The Crocodile Cave I Almost Entered

Image
Have you ever been in a dangerous situation but not realize it until later? It’s happened to me a few times while working in the field. Recently, I was walking down a dry riverbed wandering around slowly, searching the gravel for old pieces of pottery that can sometimes be spotted amongst the stones. As I reached down to grab a piece that looked like it was once the edge of a pot, an enormous tree crashed down twenty meters from where I was standing. Something like 30 seconds before, I was standing under that tree. I was in terrible danger and didn’t even know it. Perhaps the best example of such a situation occurred a couple of years ago when I came across a hole in an embankment about three feet in diameter. I was in Guanacaste during the late stages of dry season. I was in the forest alone about a 45-minute hike from my truck. Leaving the truck, I hiked through the forest down a steep hillside to where the forest transitioned into an estuary/mangrove. There was a river that fed ...

Costa Rica Birding: Meet the Wood Stork

Image
The world of birds is similar to the worlds of cars and celebrities, the pretty ones often get the headlines. Today’s bird is not reaching the podium of the beauty contest, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have other features that make it interesting. It’s oddly tall, it works in unison with other members of its species to catch food, and it frequents environments that make for picturesque backgrounds of camera trap videos. Today we meet the wood stork. The wood stork (Mycteria americana) is known as the cigüeñón or garzón in Spanish. I personally stick with garzón because cigüeñón has those two dots above the ‘u’ which frightens me because I don’t know what that means. As I mentioned at the top, these birds aren’t super attractive. From a distance they’re fine. It’s a large white bird, over 3 feet tall, with some black on its wings and super long legs standing in a still body of water. No problems there. The problem arises when you bring those binoculars to your face to get a be...

United Airlines Boosts Flights to Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Airport

Guanacaste Airport, a member of the VINCI Airports network, and the Costa Rican Tourism Board have announced an increase in United Airlines flight frequencies from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (IAH). Starting December 19, the Chicago (ORD) – Guanacaste (LIR) route will operate one daily flight, up from its previous twice-weekly schedule. The flight will depart Chicago at 09:30 and is scheduled to arrive at Guanacaste Airport at 14:40. The Houston (IAH) route will see an increase to three daily flights, up from the current two. The new schedule has flights departing Houston at 07:52 and arriving at LIR at 11:24. United Airlines has confirmed that both routes will be operated using 175-seat Boeing 737-900 aircraft. William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism, stated, “This increase in flight frequencies from Chicago and Houston is another indicator of tourists’ preference for Costa Rica. This extraordinary high season, beg...

Costa Rica Faces Energy Challenge: Demand Outpaces Forecasts

From January to May 2024, energy demand in Costa Rica grew by 8% compared to the same period last year. According to Marco Acuña, executive president of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), electricity consumption is significantly higher than last year and exceeds the institution’s forecasted growth rate of 4% or less. ICE’s plans indicate that from 2022 to 2030, a $4 billion investment is needed to upgrade infrastructure for the production, transmission, and distribution of energy. This represents 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This investment would enable the country to add 1,200 megawatts of capacity to the electricity system to meet the growing demand. “It’s a significant amount of money, and both the public and private sectors will need to make substantial efforts and remove barriers to these investments,” said Acuña. Meanwhile, Vice Minister of the Environment Ronny Rodriguez highlighted that the growth in demand is expected and could increase further with th...

U.S. Airlines Slash Fares to Costa Rica: Pura Vida As Low As $212

In a move set to significantly boost Costa Rica’s tourism sector, several major U.S. airlines have announced dramatically reduced fares to our tropical paradise. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines are now offering round-trip flights to Costa Rica for as low as $212, opening up our nation’s natural wonders to a broader range of international visitors. The discounted fares apply to flights arriving in both San José, our vibrant capital, and Liberia , the gateway to the beautiful Guanacaste province. This strategic pricing is expected to cater to diverse traveler preferences, from those seeking cultural experiences in San José to adventure enthusiasts and beach lovers drawn to Guanacaste’s lush rainforests and pristine beaches like Playa Hermosa. The Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) views this development as a significant opportunity. “These competitive fares will undoubtedly attract more visitors to experience our ‘pura vida’ lifestyle,” said an ICT spokesperson. “...

Costa Rica’s Drummond Shines: Secures Spot in Olympic Semifinals

Costa Rican athlete Gerald Drummond has made a remarkable advance to the 400m hurdles semifinals at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Drummond secured second place with a time of 48.78, narrowly missing first place in heat 2 of the repechage, which was claimed by Sweden’s Carl Bengtström with a time of 48.63. Only the top two from each heat qualified for the next round. After the competition, he spoke to the National Olympic Committee and reflected on his performance. “The feelings are quite different today (Tuesday); I’m not as tired as I was yesterday (Monday), when I felt completely exhausted. It’s a strange experience—one of those unpredictable aspects of sports. I’m thrilled to have reached the semifinals, which was my primary goal for these Olympic Games. This year has been a great one for me, and although not reaching this stage wouldn’t have diminished my achievements, making it this far is an essential part of capping off a successful year,” he said. Gerald also revealed what he wou...
