Costa Rica Wildlife: The Black-necked Stilt

Image
Today’s featured bird is the black-necked stilt, a delicate little waterbird with extremely long legs that’s famous for its popcorn. The black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) is known as the cigüeñela cuellinegro or soldadito in Spanish. I prefer soldadito , which translates to little soldier for two reasons. First, these birds do in fact resemble little soldiers in black and white uniforms standing tall at attention. Second, cigüeñela cuellinegro look like two words that I have very little chance of pronouncing correctly successively without looking at them spelled out and pronouncing them weirdly slow. The black-necked stilt is a small-bodied wading bird that is dwarfed by many of the larger storks and herons it shares its habitat with. What makes it stand out are the two incredibly long red legs that its little body is perched on. Perfectly suited for wading through shallow water, the black-necked stilts legs are the second longest in proportion to their bodies of any bird, e...

Global Whaling Ban Stays in Place After IWC Meeting

A four-decade-old moratorium on commercial whaling will remain in force after a proposal to overturn it was withdrawn Thursday at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission ( IWC ) in Peru’s capital Lima. Another proposal to declare whaling a source of global food security was also abandoned in a plenary session after failing to gain consensus among delegates from 60 countries. “We are relieved that the dark and dangerous resolution to resume commercial whaling has been withdrawn,” said Grettel Delgadillo, Latin America representative for Humane Society International (HSI). The first proposal was submitted by Antigua and Barbuda, which is not a whaling nation but has said it would pursue the matter at the next IWC meeting in Australia in 2026. Delgadillo said pro-whaling stances by countries that do not consume whale meat “demonstrates how Japan continues to influence the IWC despite not being a member anymore.” The food security proposal, in turn, was submitted by a host of A...

Costa Rican Man Convicted in US Senior Telemarketing Scam

Roger Roger, a 40-year-old Costa Rican citizen, was convicted by a federal jury in North Carolina for orchestrating a years-long telemarketing scheme that defrauded victims in the United States. According to documents presented during the trial, Roger primarily targeted senior citizens from a call center located in Costa Rica. He led a telemarketing scheme in which co-conspirators, falsely posing as U.S. government officials, contacted victims in the United States, claiming they had won a “sweepstakes” prize. The criminals convinced the victims that they had won major prizes and then informed them that they needed to make several payments to receive the prize. These payments were purportedly for taxes, customs duties, and other fees. They used various methods to conceal their identities and mislead the victims into believing they were U.S. officials. Voice over Internet Protocol technology allowed them to make calls as though they were located in Washington, D.C., and other U.S. st...

Keylor Navas Linked to FC Barcelona as Ter Stegen’s Replacement

Keylor Navas’ future remains uncertain. While the goalkeeper was eager to return to Europe, his deal with the Italian club Monza fell through. So far, there has been much speculation, with some sports journalists linking him to South American clubs and even the MLS. However, a new opportunity may have emerged for the Costa Rican goalkeeper to return to Europe. Over the weekend, FC Barcelona defeated Villarreal 5-1. However, it was a bittersweet victory, as star goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a severe injury. “First team player Marc-André ter Stegen underwent successful surgery this afternoon on a patellar tendon injury in his right knee, performed by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau under the supervision of FC Barcelona Medical Services at the Hospital de Barcelona. He will be unavailable for selection until he has fully recovered,” the club stated. Navas, who once played for long-time rival Real Madrid, is seen as a viable option according to Spanish media. Barcelona’s sportin...

Costa Rica Pressured by UN to End Impunity in Indigenous Leader Killings

The United Nations (UN) has called on Costa Rica to take immediate action to ensure that this murder does not go unpunished and to prevent further violence against the integrity of indigenous peoples and their territories. “ The UN regrets that, more than four years after the murder of indigenous rights leader Jerhy Rivera , the judicial proceedings have yet to result in the punishment of the perpetrators and masterminds, as well as compensation for the damage caused by this crime, allowing it to remain in a state of impunity,” the statement read. The organization acknowledges that the judicial system is a pillar of the rule of law in Costa Rica. Therefore, it urges the country to ensure that judicial processes reflect recent efforts by the Judiciary to guarantee access to justice for indigenous peoples—an obligation assumed by the Costa Rican State. This pronouncement follows similar concerns expressed last January regarding the acquittal of those suspected of orchestrating the d...

Tennis Prodigy Alcaraz Discusses Battles with Idol Nadal

Carlos Alcaraz has admitted to being starstruck when he first faced Rafael Nadal, saying that facing the 22-time Grand Slam champion was “kind of a nightmare”. Speaking in Berlin on Thursday ahead of the Laver Cup, the 21-year-old Alcaraz reflected on his on-court battles with fellow Spaniard Nadal. “It was a huge thing when I played him for the first time,” said the world number three. “The other times for me were kind of a nightmare.” Alcaraz already has four Grand Slam titles, winning his first at the 2022 US Open in the same year Nadal won his most recent major at the French Open. Nadal, 38, was set to take the court alongside Alcaraz in Berlin, but pulled out due to his continued struggles with injury. “Playing against Rafa is always tough. Every time for me it was a privilege to share the court,” added Alcaraz. “Every time I faced him, I tried to be a good enough player to beat him.” There was speculation Nadal may retire from the sport at the Laver Cup, as great rival Roger ...

Costa Rican Deputies Block Bill to Protect Sailfish

The deputies of the Environmental Commission voted against File 23.463, the “Law to Promote the Economic Development of the Coasts by Declaring the Sailfish a National Symbol in the Economic, Social, and Cultural Development of Costa Rica.” The vote was narrowly decided. Gilberth Jiménez and Katherine Moreira of the PLN, Manuel Morales of the ruling party, Carlos Andrés Robles of the PUSC, and David Segura of Nueva República voted against the bill. Meanwhile, Ariel Robles of the Frente Amplio, Óscar Izquierdo of the PLN, Luis Diego Vargas of the PLP, and independent María Marta Padilla voted in favor. According to Feinzaig, in his defense of the bill, this would eliminate incidental fishing and the consumption of sailfish, allowing the species to recover and serve as a tourist attraction through sport fishing, which only permits catch-and-release practices. Bycatch, the unintentional capture of fish or other marine species while targeting other species, remains a concern. Sailfish ...

Santa Teresa’s Streets to Be Paved After Six Years of Legal Battles

Great news for the communtiy of Santa Teresa and the surrounding areas: after six years of battles, the Municipal Council of Cóbano announced the paving of streets and the improvement and rehabilitation of the drainage and roadway systems between Playa del Carmen and Quebrada del Carmen. With approximately 218 kilometers of road network, 90% of these roads are currently made of ballast and dirt. These types of roads, particularly those in ballast, pose public health risks, especially during the dry season when vehicle traffic generates large amounts of dust. This progress is another achievement by lawyer and environmentalist Walter Brenes, who began his fight in February 2018 to secure the authorization for the repair and paving of roads in Santa Teresa . In his pursuit, Brenes filed a lawsuit against the council and made significant efforts to reach this important agreement for the region, which holds considerable importance for the local tourism industry. Brenes requested that t...

Costa Rica’s Sibö Chocolate Wins Gold at International Awards

The Costa Rican chocolate brand Sibö recently earned international recognition, winning a gold medal and two bronze medals at the prestigious International Chocolate Awards, held in New York. Competing among the world’s top chocolatiers, Sibö stood out for the quality and craftsmanship of its products. The gold medal was awarded for its Coffee Toffee milk chocolate bar, praised for its smooth texture and balanced flavors. The bronze medals were granted to the Caramel with Salt and Huetar 70% dark chocolate bars, further solidifying Sibö’s reputation for excellence. “Once again, Sibö Chocolat e is distinguished by the quality of its products worldwide, and places Costa Rica on the map as a producer of exceptional cocoa and fine chocolate,” the company said in a statement. Sibö’s success at the event also secured the company’s qualification for the World Fine Chocolate Competition, set to take place in November at a location yet to be confirmed. “Our small factory has always dreamed ...

Costa Rica’s Banana Industry: The Hidden Cost of Pesticide Use

Costa Rica’s Caribbean region is often celebrated for its exuberant nature and rich culture. However, the area is also a key hub for banana production. The country ranks among the world’s leading commercial banana producers, boasting an average productivity of 2,325 boxes per hectare, equivalent to about 42 metric tons. Yet, as revealed by the British newspaper The Guardian, this production comes at a significant human and environmental cost. “At dawn and dusk, the skies over Matina, the capital of Limón province on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, are filled with aircraft spraying a viscous rain of agrochemicals onto banana plantations,” the article notes. Costa Rica is one of the world’s largest users of pesticides, averaging 34.45 kg of active ingredient per hectare annually, according to the UN. Despite bans in the European Union, Costa Rica continues to use hazardous chemicals. The pesticides chlorothalonil and mancozeb, both believed to be potentially carcinogenic, as well as ...

El Salvador’s Anti-Gang Crackdown: Lessons for Costa Rica’s Security

First, Yessica Mercedes lost a brother who was beaten to death by gang members. Then, another brother was jailed in the government’s “war” against gangsters. Neither were members of the feared criminal groups that have wrought havoc on Salvadoran society, she said. Her family, however, has been caught in the middle of both gang violence and President Nayib Bukele’s controversial crackdown to halt the bloodshed.”Now we are no longer victims of criminals, now we are victims of the regime, which takes away innocent people,” the 43-year-old seamstress said. Her brother Leonel Mercedes is one of 82,000 Salvadorans detained under a state of emergency imposed in 2022 that allows arrests to be made without a court order. Bukele’s crackdown on gangs has led to a drastic drop in homicides and is praised by many Salvadorans, but rights groups slam abuses in prisons, saying inmates are forced to confess and held without contact from families and lawyers. The Salvadoran NGO Socorro Juridico Hu...

Celebrating Costa Rica Independence Day: Why the Lantern Parade?

When I was growing up, faroles – the handmade lanterns meant to symbolize the 19th-century journey that brought the message of Central American independence to Costa Rica – were simple constructions, made of paper – like a red, white and black accordion with a candle inside. We typically made them in school during preparations for the civic festival to mark Costa Rica’s Independence Day on Sept. 15. Today, faroles come in all shapes and sizes. Giant crests with the Costa Rican flag are highlighted by bright reflectors; there are elaborate “ casitas típicas ” (typical homes) and large oxcarts that are so heavy the lantern’s pole can barely support them. In today’s traditional parades, you can even find large footballs converted into lanterns, faroles with disco lights, and the dreadful Pitufina , or Smurfette, along with any of the cartoon character Smurfs, for that matter. The truth is that in Costa Rica, any excuse is a good one for mounting a “ molote, ” or large crowd, an...

Costa Rica’s Aging Population Faces Pension Crisis

A new study by the School of Medicine and the Development Observatory Research Center (CIOdD), both of the University of Costa Rica ( UCR) , revealed that more than 215,000 elderly people in the country do not receive any type of pension. According to the document, of the 546,225 inhabitants over 65 years of age, only 44% are covered by a basic contributory pension system, while 17% depend on the pension of the Non-Contributory System (RNC), which offers only 82,000 colones (approximately $150) per month. This leaves 215,528 elderly people without any formal economic protection, which could adversely affect their quality of life and well-being. For Dr. Fernando Morales, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the UCR, this situation could cause the degree of poverty and extreme poverty -which currently stands at around 28%- to skyrocket. “At present, there are 92 000 people in the non-contributory regime with an amount of 82 000 colones and this cannot buy much. It requires a social commi...

Miss Gay Costa Rica Crowned Championing LGBTQ Rights

Wearing a light blue semi-transparent dress and a diamond necklace, Desiré Stregoni was crowned Miss Gay Costa Rica this Thursday and will represent the country at the Central American level in November in El Salvador to raise awareness about “the art of being a drag queen.” “This platform allows us to speak, bring a message of love, inclusion, talk about human rights, and share what it’s like to be gay in each of the countries in the Central American region,” Stregoni told AFP before receiving her crown. The Miss Gay Costa Rica organization celebrated the coronation at an event in downtown San José, where several dozen people cheered Stregoni amid various performances with the intention of sending a “message” in support of the “need” to create an anti-discrimination framework law in the country. “In Costa Rica, if there is a hate crime against a trans person or a gay or lesbian person, and you go to file a complaint, there is currently no legal provision that defines what a hate ...

Costa Rica’s Political Landscape: Chaves’ Support Steady, But Challenges Remain

The Public Opinion Survey, conducted by the Center for Research in Political Studies at the University of Costa Rica ( CIEP-UCR ), reveals that support for President Chaves remains at 54%. Negative evaluations are at 27%, with 19% remaining neutral. Specifically, 31% of respondents lack confidence in the government’s ability to address the country’s main problems. This is followed by 39% who express little confidence, 18% with some confidence, and only 12% who have a lot of confidence. “The recent results show that positive and negative evaluations of the current government’s management and the President are similar, as observed in previous surveys. Compared to the April 2024 measurement, the government’s support remains at around 50%. Conversely, 25% of respondents in September 2024 expressed negative views of the government’s performance, a figure that has not changed,” according to the CIEP-UCR report. The sociodemographic characteristics of those who support President Rodrigo C...

Sherman Guity Returns to Costa Rica as a Hero

Costa Rican athlete Sherman Guity returned to the country after winning two gold medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. With two new gold medals, bringing his total Olympic podium appearances to four, Guity has cemented his place at the top of the athletics world by dominating the 100 and 200 meters, T64 category. Guity was welcomed by a large crowd who clapped and cheered loudly, showing love and support for the athlete. President Chaves personally received Sherman on the plane and extended his sincere congratulations. Then, he began a caravan tour in a vehicle with the legend “Here travels the gold medalist,” and even on Escazú Avenue, where he held a press conference. In his first press conference, Guity reflected on his experience, his accident, and made a few requests to the government. “First, I have to start by saying thank you. Thanks to God, family, and friends. A few years ago I had the accident. I was asked how to get over it. You don’t get over it. You learn to live ...

Nicaragua Strips 135 Ex-Detainees of Citizenship

Nicaragua revoked the nationality and confiscated the assets of a new group of former political detainees, a total of 135 people who, through U.S. mediation, were sent to Guatemala last week, a practice used previously and rejected by the UN. The measure was announced on Tuesday by the judiciary, accused of being at the service of Daniel Ortega’s government and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, who has increased repression against critics since the 2018 protests, according to the UN. A court in Managua ordered the “loss of Nicaraguan nationality for 135 people, convicted of criminal acts that threatened the Sovereignty, Independence and Self-determination of the Nicaraguan People” and “ordered the confiscation of all the assets of those convicted,” according to a statement. With this decision, 451 Nicaraguan opponents have been deprived of their nationality since early 2023, according to an count based on official data. “Ortega and Murillo denationalize and steal assets from...

Poverty Decreases in Costa Rica, But Wage Gaps Persist

Poverty in Costa Rica has been steadily decreasing year-on-year, largely due to increased employment among residents. However, wage disparities across different social groups—particularly by gender, nationality (Costa Ricans vs. Nicaraguans), and education level—are widening. A recent report by the University of Costa Rica’s Institute for Research in Economic Sciences (IICE) revealed that the poverty rate dropped by 1.4 percentage points year-on-year, reaching 20.5% of the population as of May 2024. This is a slight improvement from February 2024, when the rate was 20.61%. Extreme poverty also saw a decline, though to a lesser extent. By May 2024, the extreme poverty rate stood at 5.9%, down from 6.4% in May 2023, a reduction of 0.5 percentage points. While the decrease in poverty is a positive trend, inequality remains a significant issue. In May, Costa Rica’s Gini coefficient , which measures income inequality, remained at 0.503, identical to February and nearly the same as May 20...

Costa Rica’s Surf Star: Brisa Hennessy’s Historic 4th Place Finish

Costa Rican surfer Brisa Hennessy finished fourth in the World Surf League ( WSL ) Championship Tour after a close battle against Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb in the second round of the finals. Hennessy scored 13.17 points to Weston-Webb’s 13.77 during their 35-minute heat at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, California (USA). This fourth-place finish marks Hennessy’s best performance in her professional career, improving on her fifth-place result in the 2022 World Tour finals. The 2024 world championship was clinched by young American surfer Caitlin Simmers, who defeated fellow U.S. competitor Caroline Marks in a best-of-three final (16.87 to 17.43; 18.37 to 14.17; and 15.16 to 7.17). Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb secured third place overall, first defeating Australia’s Molly Picklum (12.74 to 9.40), then Hennessy (13.77 to 13.17), before losing to Marks in the third round (14.20 to 13.83). The final women’s rankings are: 1. Caitlin Simmers (USA) 2. Caroline Marks (USA) 3. Tatiana...

Puma Spotted in Atenas: A Rare Sight in Urban Alajuela

On Monday night, a rare sighting of a puma was reported as the wild feline was seen running through the streets of Atenas, Alajuela. A passing driver was lucky enough to witness this unusual event. While sightings of big cats in urban areas are uncommon, Costa Rica’s National System of Conservation Areas ( SINAC ) confirmed that such occurrences do happen from time to time. For the past three years, with the support of the University Center for Sustainable Development Studies, the Alajuela Subregional Office of the Central Conservation Area has been actively monitoring wildlife in various sectors of the Atenas canton using camera traps. Thanks to this initiative, the presence of pumas (Puma concolor) has been documented, along with sightings of smaller felines such as the “manigordo” (Leopardus pardalis) and “caucel” (Leopardus wiedii), in addition to a variety of other wildlife species. “Due to the shrinking habitats of these species, it’s becoming increasingly common to observe wi...

Thousands Protest in Honduras After Extradition Treaty Canceled

Thousands of right-wing opponents marched with torches in Honduras on Friday, protesting against the leftist government of President Xiomara Castro for canceling the extradition treaty with the United States, which had led to the imprisonment of approximately fifty drug traffickers. The large mobilization, organized by the “Citizen Army of Peace,” opposed the termination of the bilateral agreement last week and reached the government headquarters in Tegucigalpa without any reported incidents. On August 28, Castro announced her decision to cancel the treaty— which had been in place since 1912 but was only enforced starting in 2014— claiming it could be used to facilitate a “coup” in the Central American country. Jorge Zelaya, a congressman from the opposition National Party (PN, right-wing), told reporters during the march that he joined the protesters “in defense of democracy.” Right-wing political groups accuse the ruling Liberty and Refoundation (Libre) party, led by Castro’s husb...

Costa Rica Heightens Alert for Terror Suspects Among Migrants

Panamanian authorities have reported that members of Hezbollah, one of the most influential paramilitary groups in the Middle East, have been detected crossing the Darién jungle. Authorities also noted that these individuals are linked to groups involved in migrant smuggling. Costa Rica’s Minister of Security, Mario Zamora, explained that the recent rise in migration has heightened alerts for individuals connected to terrorism. However, no direct cases involving Hezbollah have been reported in Costa Rica so far. Other cases of individuals with links to terrorism, however, have been recorded. “Costa Rica has detained three individuals with international terrorism alerts: two Somalis linked to a little-known group and an Egyptian connected to Al Qaeda. Currently, we have a person from Kazakhstan, linked to ISIS, in custody. This migratory flow has brought individuals with a history of terrorism,” Zamora stated. He emphasized that Costa Rica and Panama share a database to identify ter...

Panama Takes Action Against Gangs with Curfew in Bocas del Toro

Panama’s President, José Raúl Mulino, announced a nighttime curfew for minors in the Caribbean province of Bocas del Toro, a popular tourist destination, in an effort to combat gangs allegedly working for the Gulf Cartel or the Aragua Train. “The crime rate in Bocas del Toro is extremely high. It’s one of the provinces leading in crime, murders, and drug trafficking,” Mulino said during his weekly press conference. Next week, Mulino plans to ask local authorities in Bocas del Toro, a province bordering Costa Rica, to enforce the curfew. This measure adds to similar curfews for minors recently implemented in the Caribbean province of Colón and the populous San Miguelito district near Panama City. Bocas del Toro , located more than 550 kilometers from Panama City and known for its idyllic islands and mainland areas, is a popular destination for foreign tourists. However, Panamanian authorities fear it may also serve as a refuge for fugitives from other countries. Mulino explained th...

A Satirical Look at the Unique Personalities You’ll Meet Visiting Costa Rica

Every year, millions of tourists visit Costa Rica to enjoy the beaches, mountains, volcanoes, and of course, the amazing assortment of wildlife. Monkeys, sloths, tapirs, jaguars, pumas, toucans, scarlet macaws, and so much more all contribute to making this small country a wonderland of fauna. Less known, but equally prevalent, is the variety of human wildlife one can spot while traveling the country. From the crowded streets of the capital to the serene coasts, Costa Rica also teems with numerous subcategories of homo sapiens . Some of the more familiar types are listed below, with descriptions: Corruptus politicus Found throughout the country, anywhere people thirsting for money and political power are known to gather. In urban areas, they will be nicely dressed and drive expensive, late-model, import tax-exempt SUVs. In rural regions, they dress more casually and drive expensive, late-model, import tax-exempt 4×4 pickups. Though scorned by the masses, they are one of the country’...

Costa Rica Celebrates as Sherman Guity Wins Paralympic Gold in 100m

Costa Rica is celebrating a historic achievement as para-athlete Sherman Guity wins the gold medal in the men’s 100m T64 category, clocking in at an impressive 10.65 seconds. This victory marks a significant moment for Costa Rica, as Guity continues to establish himself as a world-class athlete. Guity, who previously won silver in the 100m at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games—where he also secured gold in the 200m—dominated the competition this Monday. He faced off against some of the most renowned para-athletes globally, including Italy’s Maxcel Amo Manu and Germany’s Felix Streng. In securing the gold, Guity broke Manu’s semifinal record of 10.69 seconds and came within just four-hundredths of a second of the world record set by American Richard Browne (10.61) in Doha, Qatar, back in 2015. This victory places the Limón-native on the Paralympic podium for the third time. Guity is also set to compete in the 200m on Saturday, September 7th, where he will defend his Tokyo gold. The se...
