Costa Rica Reports Terror Links in Growing Migration Crisis

Costa Rica has intercepted five individuals with suspected terrorism links among the estimated 350,000 migrants passing through the country this year en route to the United States. “Costa Rica is the only country in the Americas that records every individual crossing its borders,” Security Minister Mario Zamora said, highlighting the nation’s advanced biometric screening system that analyzes fingerprints and eye irises. The Migration Police report unprecedented diversity in migrant origins, including travelers from Mongolia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, African nations, and China. Officials attribute this surge to lenient visa policies in South American countries like Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. In a significant arrest this September, authorities detained a Tajik national with ISIS connections. Another case involved a Syrian citizen with suspected terrorist ties, apprehended during biometric screening at the Paso Canoas border checkpoint. The Darién G...

Costa Rica Bill Could Make Central America Airfare Cost Just $100

A bill proposing dramatic cuts to regional airfares cleared Costa Rica’s Constitutional Chamber, advancing legislation that would cap round-trip flights within Central America at $100.The “ Low-Cost Flights to Central America ” bill, approved in first debate by 29 legislators on October 8, would limit one-way tickets to $50 and set airport fees at $23. Flights to the Dominican Republic would be capped at $120 round-trip. President Rodrigo Chaves opposes the measure, warning it could harm tourism by encouraging shorter stays. “We want tourists to explore Costa Rica—from La Fortuna to Guanacaste and Limón —and contribute to the local economy, not just visit briefly and leave for other destinations,” Chaves said. The bill faced constitutional review after ruling party members, along with PLN and PUSC deputies, filed a consultation on October 15. The Chamber found no violations, clearing its path forward in the Legislative Assembly. Diego Vargas, head of the PLP party, praised the decis...

The Making of Traditional Costa Rica Pottery from Guaitil

Image
Guaitil is a community of true authenticity preserving history and time throughout the years, there are no replicas or facades here, just ingenuity and spirit. Nestled off the beaten path between Santa Cruz and Nicoya is where you will find the artesian pottery village of Guaitil, in Guancaste’s province often referred to as the Chorotega region. The Chorotega people inhabited the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica originally after being driven away from Mexico. However, through the years the Chorotega indigenous community has decreased with time. Although they are not a population that once was, they are proud of their ancestral methods and culture preserving their legacy through their famous art of clay pottery making. From generation to generation over centuries the artisan pottery traditions have been passed down keeping the primitive techniques of the Chorotega indigenous people alive. Every step and tool involved is in its purest form embracing their heritage which is displayed t...

Costa Rica Faces Tough Decision on Nicaraguan Activist’s Extradition

Nicaraguan activist Reinaldo Picado Miranda, who fled to Costa Rica after taking part in the 2018 anti-government protests against Daniel Ortega’s regime, now faces an uncertain future. Detained since 2023, Picado’s case raises pressing questions about Costa Rica’s role as a refuge for those escaping political persecution. Picado, accused by the Nicaraguan government of aggravated murder and organized crime, claims he is the target of political persecution. Fearing extradition, he warns of the severe risks, including torture, he would face if returned to Nicaragua. His initial refugee application was denied by Costa Rican authorities, but he filed a new appeal in 2023 with the Migratory Administrative Tribunal. Despite his legal battles, Picado’s situation has drawn the attention of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights ( IACHR ), which issued precautionary measures on his behalf. The IACHR warned of the “serious and urgent” risks to Picado’s life and personal integrity, urg...

Rosario Murillo: The Iron Fist Behind Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega

Rosario Murillo, wife of Nicaraguan strongman Daniel Ortega and soon to be his co-president, is known for extravagant diatribes and eccentric outfits. But Nicaraguans are under no illusion. Behind the colorful, hippie-esque exterior, critics say, is a ruthless authoritarian who has helped run her husband’s increasingly dictatorial regime with an iron fist. No senior official will dare lift a finger without the 73-year-old’s say-so, insiders have testified. Murillo has acted as the Ortega government’s only spokesperson since 2007.  Known for her fiery speeches laced with biblical and esoteric references, she preaches “love and reconciliation” while in the same breath branding the opposition “blood-thirsty vampires.” In 2017, she became vice-president. Long seen as the real power behind the scenes, Murillo is now set to officially become “co-president” after a loyalist parliament on Friday approved a constitutional reform that will also give the pair near-unbridled power over all m...

Poverty Surges in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province

Extreme poverty in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province has surged from 1.9% in 2021 to 3.9% in 2024, doubling in just three years. Workers in construction, lodging, and food services have been hit hardest, according to a recent analysis by the Observatory of Tourism, Migration, and Sustainability (Obtur) at the Chorotega Regional Headquarters of the National University (UNA). Although poverty initially decreased in 2021 due to a real estate boom along Guanacaste’s coasts, it has risen sharply since 2022. Construction workers experienced the largest spike, with poverty jumping from 7.4% in 2022 to 17.1% in 2023. Extreme poverty within the sector also tripled, climbing from 1.1% to 3.3%. Similarly, non-extreme poverty in lodging and food services rose from 13% in 2019 to 15.8% in 2023. “While Guanacaste has over a million square meters of housing projects processed, the benefits are not reaching local workers,” said Esteban Barboza, a researcher at Obtur. “Social housing projects in key ...

Global Survey Highlights Costa Rica’s Vulnerability to Extreme Weather Events

According to the Global Climate Action Survey 2024, conducted by Gensler, Costa Rica is among the countries most severely impacted by extreme weather events attributed to climate change. The survey, which offers a global perspective on the perceptions of climate change and its effects, highlights the significant challenges faced by Costa Rica’s communities and infrastructure. The findings reveal a stark reality: 82% of Costa Ricans surveyed reported experiencing heat waves, while 66% faced heavy rains, and 65% were affected by storms. These extreme weather events not only disrupt daily life but also significantly reduce the quality of life for many residents. Additionally, 45% of respondents believe their communities are unprepared for future natural disasters. Only 4% consider themselves “extremely prepared,” emphasizing the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster mitigation strategies. “Recent events, such as the floods in Guanacaste and the Southern Zone, underscore ...

Costa Rica’s Liberia Airport Reopens Early After Runway Repairs

Costa Rica’s Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport in Guanacaste has resumed operations after a week-long closure for runway maintenance. Although the work was initially scheduled to conclude tomorrow, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation completed the tasks a day earlier than planned. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for updated flight information. In a statement, the Guanacaste Airport assured travelers, “We are committed to ensuring a safe and gradual transition to normal operations, always prioritizing the experience and safety of our passengers.” Years of Delays and Impacts on Tourism The runway’s poor condition has been a long-standing issue for Guanacaste’s tourism sector. Over two years ago, industry leaders raised concerns, but bureaucratic delays, including studies, analyses, and appeals, left the problem unresolved until now. The week-long closure caused significant disruptions, with the National Chamber of Hotels reporting severe financial impacts. Nearly 20...

Costa Rica’s Nations League Run Ends in Heartbreaking Defeat

Costa Rica was left to lament two disallowed goals, as their 2-2 draw against Panama ultimately saw them eliminated from the CONCACAF Nations League with a 3-2 aggregate defeat. In team news, interim head coach Claudio Vivas made two changes from last week’s defeat, with Alejandro Bran replacing the injured Juan Pablo Vargas and Ariel Lassiter coming in for Alonso Martinez, as Francisco Calvo reverted to his customary center-back position. First-half After just four minutes, Costa Rica got off to the dream start when they were awarded a penalty after Edgardo Fariña hacked down Manfred Ugalde in the box. But Warren Madrigal was unable to convert the spot-kick, with Orlando Mosquera comfortably saving the tame effort. The miss seemed to rouse the home team, with Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira making several good saves afterward, and in the 13th minute, the pressure finally took its toll when Panama scored the opener through defender Cesar Blackman, who bundled the ball home fr...

Costa Rica’s Liberia Airport Crisis Strands Thousands Until November 21st

The Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste, will remain closed until 6 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, due to ongoing runway issues, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) announced today. This extended closure of Costa Rica’s second-busiest airport continues to significantly impact flights and the tourism sector. “All international commercial operations are canceled,” the DGAC confirmed in a statement released this morning. The closure, initially implemented last Friday, has seen brief reopening’s followed by further shutdowns, causing widespread disruption. Airport authorities are working to bring the runway up to safety standards. “We hope this intervention resolves the persistent runway issues,” a spokesperson for Guanacaste Airport stated. “Recent disruptions have hindered our ability to provide the quality service expected by passengers and business partners.” Passengers with affected flights are strongly advised to contact their airlines imm...

Costa Rica Faces Tourism Fallout Over Liberia Airport Shutdown

The National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) has called on the Costa Rican government to immediately reopen Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste. The airport’s recent closure, which lasted several days, has caused significant inconvenience for domestic and international travelers, sparking outrage from industry stakeholders. “CANATUR expresses its indignation at the operational disorder caused by the reopening and abrupt closure , without prior notice, of the airport’s runway,” the organization said in a statement. The chamber emphasized that such disruptions harm Costa Rica’s reputation as a top-tier tourist destination, especially with the high season fast approaching. The tourism sector has been particularly hard hit by the closure, as many travelers found themselves stranded, unable to reach or depart from their destinations. The situation was further exacerbated by maintenance needs that intensified the operational challenges. CANATUR warned that the fa...

Solar Panels Bring Clean Water to Costa Rica’s Nairi Awari Community

In the middle of Costa Rica’s jungle, the indigenous Nairi Awari community no longer has to fetch water from the river with buckets. For the first time, they receive it in their homes thanks to solar panels that pump it from a nearby spring. The 20 families of this Cabécar indigenous community live in a mountainous area accessible only by a muddy trail that cuts through a tropical forest, four kilometers from the nearest rural road. “Having clean water close by feels nice,” says Nelson Martínez, a member of this community located 100 km east of San José. To make this possible, they had to roll two tanks, one holding 2,500 liters and the other 7,500 liters, along the trail to install them at a nearby spring. There, the water is filtered and pumped using energy from six solar panels, each generating 450 watts. The community’s homes still lack electricity, as the water pump consumes all the energy generated by the panels, which are installed in a clearing in the jungle. Transporting t...

Runway Repairs Force Temporary Shutdown of Costa Rica’s Liberia Airport

The Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, commonly known as Guanacaste Airport , will be closed on Friday, November 15, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., suspending all scheduled flights during that 12-hour period. The closure was ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) for operational safety reasons. An internal circular sent by the DGAC to the airport community indicates that the closure is necessary to carry out runway repairs before operations can resume. “Guanacaste Airport informs that for operational safety reasons, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation has notified that there will be no operations on Friday, November 15. A total of 36 international operations, including incoming and outgoing flights, will be affected,” stated a note issued by the airport’s management. Passengers are urged not to travel to the terminal and to coordinate with their respective airlines to reschedule their departures. “We ask passengers not to travel to the airport and t...

Costa Rica Travel Update: Red Alert on Pacific Coast as Flooding Worsens

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) in Costa Rica has issued a red alert for the Pacific coast as severe flooding and heavy rains continue. The rest of the country remains under an orange alert, with the Southern Caribbean under a yellow alert. This heightened alert follows forecasts that the intense rainy conditions are expected to persist throughout the week. “Rainfall is projected to continue for the next several days, especially along the Costa Rican Pacific coast. Additionally, there is significant soil saturation across much of the country,” the CNE reported. In just six days, Guanacaste has recorded rainfall totals that typically match the entire month of November. “In some areas, rainfall levels have been 8, 9, or even 10 times the usual amount for November. If the average monthly rainfall is 130 millimeters, some areas have received up to 900 millimeters in just six days,” explained meteorologist Daniel Poleo. Many areas are experiencing unprecedented rainfall levels, w...

Lord of the Rings Stars Dominic Monaghan and William Boyd Visit Costa Rica

Actors Dominic Monaghan (47) and William Nathan Boyd (56), known for their roles in  The Lord of the Rings  film trilogy, are currently visiting Costa Rica. According to the General Directorate of Migration, the pair arrived in the country on Thursday, November 7. They were spotted by fans during celebrations at the Cofradía de la Virgen de Guadalupe in Nicoya, where they enjoyed traditional Costa Rican food and beverages, including chicheme, a popular local drink made with corn and spices. These festivities involve a centuries-old tradition inherited from the Chorotega ancestors, who recognized the Virgin of Guadalupe, whom they called “La Señorita,” as their patron saint, after the evangelizing processes carried out in the region of Nicoya, since the arrival of the Spaniards in 1522. Reports suggest that Monaghan and Boyd’s trip also involves filming for a documentary focused on Costa Rica’s Blue Zones . These regions are known worldwide for the remarkable longevity of the...

Southern Cuba Hit by Twin Earthquakes, Residents Evacuate

Two powerful earthquakes shook southern Cuba this Sunday in quick succession, reported U.S. geologists, while Cuban authorities said no tsunami warning was issued, and no immediate deaths were reported. The United States Geological Survey ( USGS ) estimated the second tremor at a magnitude of 6.8. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 23.5 kilometers, about 40 kilometers off the coast of Bartolomé Masó, in the southern province of Granma, and just an hour after a first tremor, which the USGS estimated at a magnitude of 5.9, at a depth of 14.2 kilometers in the ocean and about 175 kilometers from Santiago de Cuba, the country’s second-largest city. The state newspaper Granma reported that no deaths were immediately reported, but that the earthquake was felt throughout the Caribbean Island nation. “Here people quickly went out to the street because the ground was shaking very hard,” said Andrés Pérez, a 65-year-old retiree who lives in central Santiago de Cuba, referring to the first ...

Why Costa Ricans Call Themselves Ticos and Americans Gringos

Although Shakespeare’s Juliet spoke true when she said, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” she was referring to given names passed on to us by parents and ancestors. What others choose to call us, or what we choose to call ourselves, is a different matter. To understand what really lies behind the labels others give us or we give ourselves, it is useful to look at the origin and history of these labels. Many of you may already know that the origin of the word tico , the affectionate name for Costa Ricans, comes from the diminutive “-ico.” This suffix, applied to the ending of a to/ta word like gato/gata (cat), indicates small size, youth, familiarity, or fondness. Typically, to say “little cat” or “kitten,” a Spanish-speaker would say gatito . However, Costa Ricans often say gatico . This suffix was, and still is, used so extensively by Costa Ricans that they came to be known as ticos . It’s an endearing term, free of the sarcasm and prejudice of racial slurs, and Cost...

Costa Rica continues to affirm its commitment to wildlife protection with an advanced monitoring and control initiative at Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela. Managed by AERIS, this program aims to enhance both biodiversity conservation and operational safety at the airport. To date, it has identified 152 bird species, 15 mammal species, 13 reptile species, and 5 amphibian species around the airport facilities. AERIS has intensified efforts to create a safe environment for both aerial operations and local wildlife. Key components of this wildlife control program include innovative technologies, such as camera traps that record wildlife movements in real time and specialized pyrotechnics that safely deter animals without causing harm. Barra del Colorado: Costa Rica’s Best Kept Secret for Nature

Located in the province of Limon, Barra del Colorado is one of Costa Rica’s most untouched ecotourism destinations. Known for its rich biodiversity and its reputation as a top destination for tarpon fishing, Barra del Colorado offers an exclusive retreat for those seeking to experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica. In its early years, Barra del Colorado experienced promising development, with several hotels catering to an influx of tourists. However, as some of these hotels closed, the area saw a decline, and access routes—primarily air routes—were largely abandoned. Yet, this secluded charm has turned Barra del Colorado into a hidden gem, with dedicated local hotel operators continuing to welcome people who love to fish for tarpon and snook as well as ecotourists despite the challenges. What Makes Barra del Colorado Special? The  Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge  spans 81,177 hectares and consists of diverse ecosystems, including co...

Top 5 Bird Watching Destinations in Costa Rica for Nature Lovers

Bird watching in Costa Rica ranks as one of the country’s most popular activities for tourists. Recognized as one of the world’s top five bird-watching destinations, Costa Rica offers extraordinary biodiversity and easy access to premier birding sites. With six ecozones, dozens of micro-ecosystems, and approximately 10% of the world’s bird species, the country draws bird watchers from around the globe. Costa Rica’s exceptional bird diversity is largely due to its tropical location, bridging North and South America. This unique position allows Costa Rica to serve as a natural corridor for migratory birds. The country’s mountainous topography also creates numerous microclimates and habitats for various bird species, including rainforests, cloud forests, mangroves, beaches, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and tropical dry forests. Each year, migratory birds travel through Costa Rica from North America, mainly from Alaska, Canada, and other northern regions, escaping winter weather on their way...

The Future of Latin American Migration After U.S. Elections

Although Latin America has not been a priority in the campaign for the November 5 elections in the United States, the victory of either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris could have dramatic repercussions for a region from which thousands of migrants head to the United States. Both have promised to toughen measures against immigration, one of the main concerns for Americans, regardless of whether they vote Democrat or Republican, according to polls. For Latin Americans fleeing the consequences of climate change, violence, poverty, or the collapse of democracy in some countries, the United States still represents the dream of a better life, if not for themselves, then for their children. A dream that Donald Trump has promised to cut short. He won the 2016 election with a focus on immigration and hopes to do the same next week. The United States has become the “world’s trash can,” he repeats. Largest Deportation Effort in History The Republican has promised to close borders, end recepti...

Life in Costa Rica: 12 Things That Make This Country Special

I am sometimes accused of being overly negative and sarcastic in my writings about Costa Rica and my life here. Fair enough, though anyone who knows me could vouch that I can be equally negative and sarcastic about my home country of the United States. Having said that, here is my list of things I love about Costa Rica: 1. The Climate and Seasons Year-round warm weather, two seasons, enough rainy season that you can not wait for the dry summer season, then enough sunshine and heat that you can not wait for the rains to return. And at year’s end, there is nothing that compares to a warm, tropical Christmas celebration. 2. The Open-Air Lifestyle The open-air life, downtowns crowded with pedestrians, windowless restaurants, hikers, bikers, surfers, doors and windows of the house open in the daytime, breathing that fresh air! 3. Pacific Sunsets Sunsets. The first time I watched the sun go down at the beach I was in awe– and still am the thousandth time. From the moment the sun hits t...
