El Salvador Loosens Bitcoin Mandate Amidst IMF Loan

El Salvador, the world’s first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, is taking steps to loosen its grip on the cryptocurrency. This move comes as part of a reform package aimed at securing a $1.4 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF loan, intended to address El Salvador’s balance of payment needs and support economic reforms, carries several conditions related to Bitcoin. One key condition is that accepting Bitcoin as payment will now be voluntary for private businesses. This marks a significant shift from the previous mandate that obligated businesses to accept Bitcoin, potentially hindering wider adoption due to concerns over volatility and practicality. Furthermore, the government’s involvement in Bitcoin-related activities will be limited. Tax payments must be made in US dollars, the country’s other official currency, and the government’s participation in the Chivo e-wallet, a platform designed to facilitate Bitcoin transactions, will be gradually ...

Inside El Salvador’s Mega-Prison: Latin America’s Largest Facility

Marvin Medrano, ‘Sayco’, has “MS” for Mara Salvatrucha tattooed on his torso… forever. He’s serving 100 years in the mega-prison for gang members built two years ago in El Salvador by Nayib Bukele’s government, aware he’ll never leave. In a small room next to the cells, under police surveillance, Medrano, 41, tells journalists he regrets his violent past. “We’re in a maximum-security prison where we know there’s no way out for us,” says ‘Sayco’, as he’s known in MS-13, sentenced for two murders. As a symbol of his “war” against gangs, Bukele inaugurated the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) on January 31, 2023, considered Latin America’s largest prison, in an uninhabited area outside Tecoluca, 75 km southeast of San Salvador. The prison, surrounded by huge concrete walls, is designed for 40,000 inmates but currently holds about 15,000 from MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs, said director Belarmino García. They were detained under Bukele’s state of emergency following 87 murders between M...

Costa Rica No Longer #1 Retirement Destination in 2025

Costa Rica ranks third in the Best Places to Retire in 2025: The Annual Global Retirement Index, published by International Living. Although it remains one of the favorites, the country no longer holds the top spot. In 2024, it was ranked first . “The Pura Vida vibe flowing through Costa Rica attracts those seeking adventures in nature and a laid-back lifestyle,” the report stated. The country is described as an idyllic place, with “verdant landscapes, breathtaking turquoise waterfalls, brightly colored toucans, and scarlet macaws flying overhead.” “Though no larger than West Virginia, Costa Rica contains almost 6% of the world’s biodiversity and is a top destination for ecotourism and nature lovers. Coupled with the warmth of the friendly Ticos (as Costa Ricans call themselves), Costa Rica is a true gem,” author Bekah Bottone highlighted. International Living also mentions the warmth and friendliness of Ticos and Ticas, which helps them feel a sense of belonging when coming to the ...

Honduras Prepares for Mass Deportations Under Trump

The government of Honduras announced this Saturday that it is preparing a support plan for its citizens who may be deported from the United States, after Donald Trump’s administration began an offensive against illegal migration. “In response to the current migration situation, President Xiomara Castro will launch the ‘Brother, Come Home’ Program in support of our migrants,” assured Honduras’ Foreign Minister Enrique Reina on his X account. According to Reina, the program includes support for citizens of this nation through Honduras’ consular network on US soil, as well as “legal support and emergency visits” by consuls to migrant detention centers in the United States. “We will not leave alone our migrant brothers who contribute (with their remittances) to the country,” stated the head of Honduran diplomacy. The program, for which no start date has been announced, includes providing a “solidarity” monetary bonus -amount unspecified-, food support and access to employment programs fo...

U.S. New Immigration Rules Impact on Costa Rica

With the arrival of Donald Trump’s administration, the United States is carrying out mass deportation campaigns of migrants. The Republican president promised to act against irregular immigration during his campaign, declared a state of national emergency on the border with Mexico, and signed several decrees. “Deportation flights have begun. President Trump is sending a strong and clear message to the entire world: if you illegally enter the United States of America, you will face severe consequences,” said Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, through X. Trump also ended a program of his predecessor, Joe Biden, aimed at providing legal pathways for asylum claims for people who fled violence and reported political persecution. He also suspended, until further notice, all arrivals of refugees seeking asylum in the United States. The impact of these decisions will greatly affect most Latin American countries. In the case of Central America, and particularly Costa Rica, Donal...

US Begins Mass Deportations with Military Flights to Guatemala

US military planes carrying dozens of expelled migrants arrived in Guatemala, authorities said Friday, as President Donald Trump moved to crack down on illegal immigration. A total of 265 Guatemalans arrived on three flights — two operated by the military, and one a charter, the Central American country’s migration institute said, updating earlier figures. Washington also sent four deportation flights to Mexico on Thursday, the White House press secretary said on X, despite multiple US media reports that authorities there had turned at least one plane back. The Mexican government has not confirmed either the arrival of flights or any agreement to receive a specific number of planes with deportees. But Mexico’s foreign ministry said Friday it was ready to work with Washington over the deportation of its citizens, saying the country would “always accept the arrival of Mexicans to our territory with open arms.” The flights came as the White House said it had arrested more than a thousan...

Costa Rica Grapples with Rural Gentrification and Property Prices

A recent National University (UNA) survey reveals that 86.8% of Costa Ricans believe foreign residents are appropriating coastal properties. The study found that 76.9% think this foreign presence drives up property costs, while 66.2% associate it with increased living costs in affected communities. This gentrification process is particularly impacting rural areas, where middle and upper-class foreign residents are displacing locals. The “National Perception of Residents in Costa Rica” study examined citizens’ views on residents from the United States, Canada, and Europe. Guanacaste emerged as the most affected province, with 19.4% of homes unoccupied, leading to increased use of platforms like Airbnb and Booking that transform communities into temporary destinations. Researcher Aarón Mora Barahona notes that “expats” – middle or upper-class individuals arriving for tourism, retirement, remote work, or lifestyle changes – impact communities significantly. Their privileged socioecono...

Costa Rica Wildlife Reveals Mysterious Striped Hog-Nosed Skunk

Image
Today we meet the striped hog-nosed skunk, a little-known species that inhabits forests throughout Costa Rica. The striped hog-nosed skunk (Conepatus semistriatus) is known as the zorro hediondo rayado in Spanish. It is one of three species of skunk that call Costa Rica home and the only one that lives throughout the entire country. The other two species, the hooded skunk and the spotted skunk , are confined mostly to Guanacaste, on the Pacific coast of the country. If I say picture a skunk in your mind, a striped hog-nosed skunk mostly looks like what you’re picturing. They’re black with a pair of white stripes that connect on its forehead. What might be a little different than you’re imagining is that these skunks are large, sometimes more than 7 pounds, their coat is quite short, and that classic fuzzy skunk-tail is a little different. Instead of being fuzzy the whole length of the tail, the tail starts out with shorter hair and then puffs out at the top. The ‘hog-nosed’ part ref...

Costa Rica’s Wildlife Refuge at Risk: International Conservation Standards Violated

Ariel Robles, deputy of the Frente Amplio, denounced the Costa Rican State before the Ramsar Convention for alleged illegal actions committed in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge in Talamanca. The wetland was declared internationally important in 1995, a designation given because of its biological richness and the fact that the area serves as a refuge for a significant number of seasonal migratory waterfowl. According to the complaint filed by Robles, the State would be responsible for allowing a complete lack of control, illegal logging, and the draining of wetlands in Gandoca. This has also been denounced by the Congressman on several occasions. In a press release, Ariel Robles pointed out that the main irregularities are related to the reduction of the protected area’s boundaries without technical studies, non-compliance with the delimitation and conservation of wetlands, the issuance of logging permits in sensitive areas, and the absence of clear measures to guarantee the site’s pro...

Basketball Icon Michael Jordan Touches Down Again In Costa Rica

No one can resist the wonders that Costa Rica has to offer, not even basketball legend Michael Jordan, who is back in the country shortly after his first vacation here. As confirmed by the General Directorate of Immigration (DGME), the star arrived in the country today. According to several reports, Jordan arrived in his private jet at Juan Santamaría International Airport. Although the official reasons for his visit remain unknown, media reports suggest he would, once again, visit the country to practice sport fishing. This has become one of Michael’s favorite hobbies over the past few years. His arrival was documented by Tomás Cubero, who has been an aircraft spotter for 20 years. “He arrived in a spectacular new Gulfstream 650ER from Palm Beach, FL (KPBI) as EJM2 ‘Jetspeed 2,’” he said. Just like many other celebrities, the five-time NBA MVP was captivated by Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Michael Jordan’s First Visit Previously, Jordan had been in the country from January 6 to 12 ...

Costa Rica Cybercrime Doubles as Criminals Go Digital

Cybercrime continues to increase in Costa Rica, and the figures are concerning to Costa Rican authorities. Randall Zúñiga, Director of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), stated that the face of crime in Costa Rica has changed in recent years, shifting from street assaults to more sophisticated types of crime. According to the head of the OIJ, cybercrimes and crimes against life are overtaking incidents involving property. This criminal activity skyrocketed in 2024. Data show that in 2023, 5,259 such crimes were committed, while 2024 closed with 10,040 cases. The country transitioned from reporting 14 cybercrimes per day to 27, marking an increase of more than 90% in just one year. The upward trend of this crime, which only ten years ago, in 2014, barely accounted for 0.3% of all crime reports in the country, has been confirmed. Today, they comprise 9%. Zúñiga pointed out that since the pandemic, this activity has surged, as health measures have confined many people to t...

Costa Rica Coffee Crisis Labor Shortage Leads to Major Crop Loss

Costa Rica’s coffee industry faces losses of up to 10% as Nicaragua’s strict new immigration laws and unseasonable rains disrupt the crucial harvest season. Recent restrictions implemented by the Nicaraguan regime of Daniel Ortega have made it difficult for many people to come to work in Costa Rica as they historically have. Ortega imposed a new law with penalties of two to six years in jail for Nicaraguans who enter, leave, or attempt to leave the national territory in an irregular manner, in addition to a fine of $1,000. According to ICAFE , labor shortages left 15% of the grain unharvested, accumulating on the farm floor. During the current coffee harvesting season, not even 50 laborers from Nicaragua have entered the country legally, according to Victor Carvajal, head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG). This has affected early maturing areas such as Turrialba, Coto Brus, Pérez Zeledón, and Los Santos. Martín Hidalgo, ICAFE’s technical manager, said that “the spee...

Nicaragua Military Reform Adds Thousands to Volunteer Police Force

With their faces covered in black hoods, thousands of civilians were sworn in by Nicaraguan authorities as “volunteer police,” a force created as part of a controversial constitutional reform that the opposition in exile describes as “paramilitary.” About 2,500 volunteer police officers, dressed in white shirts and black pants, lined up to take their oath on Wednesday and Thursday in the departments of Estelí and Madriz (north) before Nicaragua’s Police Chief, Francisco Díaz, according to images released by official media. “We are also moving forward with new swearing-in ceremonies of our heroic volunteer police,” Vice President Rosario Murillo , wife of President Daniel Ortega, said on Thursday, reporting that the process began Wednesday and will continue in the coming days. The “volunteer police” was created as part of the extensive constitutional reform approved in November in the first legislative instance and will be endorsed in the new legislature, currently in session, by a Co...

US Tourists Lead Costa Rica’s Record Tourism Growth in 2024

Six out of ten tourists who visited Costa Rica in 2024 came from the United States, one more than in 2023, attracted by the Central American country’s lush beaches and rich biodiversity, according to a report published Thursday by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). Of the 2.6 million foreign visitors who arrived by air to Costa Rica in 2024, 1.5 million were U.S. nationals, representing 59% of the total and a 10.9% increase compared to 2023. “The 7.7% growth in tourist arrivals by air is a testimony to Costa Rica’s global appeal,” said Tourism Minister William Rodríguez during the presentation of the annual tourist arrival report. Costa Rica is a tourist magnet for its volcanoes, forests, and paradise-like beaches. However, in recent years, crime has increased due to drug trafficking, with a rate of 16.6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024. Last December, the U.S. government recommended “increased caution” to its citizens visiting this Central American country. In addit...

Costa Rica Grocery Store Guide: Local Products and Shopping Tips

Chances are you shop local if you call Tiquicia home or spend enough time in Costa Rica. You head out to the feria, frutería y verdulería, pescadería and carnicería to enjoy all the fresh, wholesome goodness this country has to offer. For those yet to experience the supermercado in Costa Rica, it can feel like a scavenger hunt for some common items while being overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices for others. Consider this to be your quick guide to helping you prepare for the aisles of Costa Rica’s grocery stores. Dairy For starters, not all of your milk options are found in the refrigerated section. You will also find an endless supply of milk cartons tucked away in the aisles. In the grocery store I was just in nearly one entire side of an aisle was dedicated to rows upon rows of milk options in cartons. Then there are bags of powdered milk too, needless to say, you have a few choices. As for eggs, they aren’t chilling in the cold section either. They are out on the shelve...

Costa Rica Legend Navas Could Return Home After PSG Departure

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas has been linked to many clubs following his departure from PSG. Navas wanted to remain in Europe, playing at the top level, and had everything ready to join Serie A. However, the deal with the Italian club Monza fell through at the last minute. Some reports indicated that a financial agreement between both parties wasn’t possible.  During an interview with Costa Rican media, Navas shared that he wanted to play in top leagues. Sports journalists reported that Navas had offers from MLS, LaLiga, Saudi Arabia, and other leagues.  The former Real Madrid player was even linked to arch-rival club FC Barcelona when Marc André Ter Stegen got injured. However, the Catalan club decided to bring in goalie Wojciech Szczesny.  Recently, Chilean club Colo Colo expressed interest in the three-time Champions League winner. Nonetheless, the club’s board decided to bring back Brayan Cortés.  Now, the 38-year-old, who has been without a team since mid-2024, cou...

Mass Protests Challenge El Salvador’s Anti-Gang Policy and Prison System

Around 2,000 Salvadorans demonstrated this Sunday in San Salvador to demand the release of their family members “unjustly” imprisoned during President Nayib Bukele’s anti-gang war, in effect since 2022. Displaying photos and banners of the detained, the demonstration began at Cuscatlán Park in the west and ended in the capital’s center without incidents. “I ask for freedom for my husband and son, because they have been captured unjustly, as they owe nothing, they are not criminals, nor are they delinquents,” said Sebastiana Avelar, a 54-year-old housewife. Sebastiana’s husband, Marcos Avelar (57), was captured on July 29, 2022; and her son Manuel Ernesto Avelar (24), on March 13, 2023. “It’s desperate” living without “knowing how they are,” she said, as visits to prisons are prohibited. In response to an escalation of homicides, on March 27, 2022, Bukele began a “war” against gangs under a state of exception that allows arrests without judicial orders and under which 84,260 people ha...

Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Dominican Republic reject Maduro’s inauguration in Venezuela

Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and the Dominican Republic rejected this Saturday the inauguration ceremony of President Nicolás Maduro for a third term in Venezuela following elections they consider fraudulent. The four governments, which make up the Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD), rejected “in the strongest terms the illegitimate inauguration act of January 10 in Venezuela (…) product of electoral fraud imposed through state terror against the Venezuelan people.” Maduro, in the presidency since 2013, took oath in a ceremony questioned by the United States, the European Union and several Latin American countries. The opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, claims he won the July 28 presidential elections and called the inauguration ceremony a “coup d’état.” “He crowns himself dictator,” the opposition leader stated from exile in a video shared on social media. For the ADD, “there is evidence” that in the presidential elections “the electorate voted peacefully and ...

Wildlife Secrets Revealed From a Single Tree Branch in Costa Rica

Image
This morning, as I sat in my sweaty little office being slow-roasted by an incorrectly vented clothes dryer, my task, as it often is, was to review a couple hundred wildlife videos and enter information from each video into a database. It’s a repetitive, seemingly tedious task that for some reason I have no problem with. I sit at my computer with my feet on a dog, I put on a podcast and type away. The project I was working on consisted of a few camera traps on a private coastal farm where I’ve had the good fortune to work for several years now. Over the years, I’ve moved cameras all around the property. I’ve had cameras on trails. Cameras overlooking streams. I pointed a camera at big hole in a tree and monitored it for over a year. For a while, I had camera on the base of a tree that stuck out horizontally from the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean where, even though I felt like I could possibly tumble off the cliff every time I reviewed the camera, it was well worth it because ...

Costa Rica Declares Obesity a Chronic Disease

Obesity is acknowledged as a chronic disease related to public health in Costa Rica, according to the Ministry of Health. The decree signed by health authorities emphasizes that individuals with obesity will have access to comprehensive care and treatment as one of its main provisions. The text also suggests that this condition is associated with illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and depression. María Bolaños, president of the Association of Nutrition Professionals, stated that the declaration is crucial for tackling obesity. She noted that obesity and being overweight have led to diseases like cancer, diabetes, kidney issues, and heart diseases in young individuals and even children, which was not previously observed. The document says that it is the responsibility of the State, via its institutions, to safeguard the health of the population and ensure the welfare of its citizens. Consequently, it is essential to classify obesity as a disease so that individuals affecte...

Mel Gibson Reveals Love for Costa Rica on Joe Rogan Podcast

Many Hollywood stars love Costa Rica and choose to vacation in the country. Some have even bought their own houses to enjoy the country’s natural beauty. Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson is no exception and has visited the country many times. Gibson was featured in an episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he discussed several topics. They both talked about the devastating fires occurring in Los Angeles, where unfortunately, Gibson lost his home. The deadly fires have destroyed countless houses, and Los Angeles authorities have reported at least 10 people dead. Thousands were forced to evacuate, as evacuation orders are in place. Rogan asked him if that would make him leave the area and if he had any other place to go. “I have a place in Costa Rica, and I love it. I bought it many years ago, and it is in a good location, not in a very touristy area,” Mel Gibson said. Gibson’s response was not what Rogan expected. Immediately, the podcast host asked him if he felt safe in Costa Rica. “...

Chained Monkey Among Latest Wildlife Rescues in Costa Rica

Although Costa Rica is committed to protecting wildlife, unscrupulous individuals continue to violate the rules and insist on keeping wild animals as pets. The National System of Conservation Areas ( SINAC ) rescued a white-faced monkey that was held in captivity in Jacó. The animal was tied with a chain around its neck, which caused serious injuries, according to SINAC personnel. “He no longer had any hair to protect him around the neck because of the chain. He had open wounds that must have caused him a lot of pain,” officials stated. The animal was taken to Zooave, located in La Garita de Alajuela, where it is receiving veterinary medical attention. SINAC emphasized that keeping wildlife in captivity is a crime and urges people to report any cases they know of. “For those who had this animal in captivity, the corresponding complaint was filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” SINAC confirmed. Parrots, parakeets, turtles, snakes, and iguanas are among the wild animals protected...

Costa Rica Jungle Trail Adventure With Two Very Different Dogs

Image
When I go to the beach, part of my routine is a strenuous jungle hike every morning. While the distance covered is only about 3 kilometers (a bit less than 2 miles) round trip, the walk features no level terrain. From the moment I step out of the apartment and begin with a 100 meter uphill walk to the trail entrance, I traverse a series of valleys and peaks until arriving at a scenic overlook, that is the halfway point, and a nice reward for the challenging hike. I am not alone in my hike. My company is 2 dogs, that belong to my daughter, in whose apartment I stay when visiting the beach. A fair enough exchange. After she goes to work in the morning, the dogs become akin to my stalkers, following ‘grandpa’ around the house until I put on my shoes and gather the leashes for the initial part of the walk (they are unleashed and free to roam once on the actual trail). Meet Milo and Rodolfo (lingering outside the bathroom door to greet me when I open–see what I mean about stalkers?). They...

Honduras Arrests Former Military Chief for 2009 Protest Death

Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Honduras, General Romeo Vásquez, was arrested this Sunday as the alleged perpetrator of the military-led homicide of a protester in 2009, days after leading the coup against former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009). Along with him, the Deputy Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Venancio Cervantes, and the former Commander of the Joint Operations Command, Carlos Puerto, were also arrested, reported the Secretary of State for Security (Interior), Gustavo Sánchez, on his X social media account. “The three arrests were executed moments ago by the Honduras Police in coordination with the Public Ministry in Tegucigalpa and La Paz (west),” said Sánchez. The three former military officers were wanted by the Public Ministry “for allegedly being responsible for the crimes of homicide and serious injuries” following an armed attack by military personnel against protesters near the Toncontín airport in Tegucigalpa on July 5, 2009. The protesters ...

Costa Rican Towns Achieve Zero Murder Rate Through Local Action

Despite the increase in crime and insecurity being a significant worry for Costa Ricans, certain regions of the country have successfully evaded the crisis. As per official figures from the statistics section of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), merely 14 cantons in the nation reported no intentional homicides in the previous year. The cantons that reported zero victims of intentional homicides in 2024 include Acosta, Barva, Dota, Flores, Guatuso, Hojancha, Montes de Oro, Monteverde, Nandayure, Naranjo, San Isidro, Santa Bárbara, Tarrazú, and Zarcero. Rándall Zúñiga, director of the OIJ, highlighted that this figure stands in stark contrast to the concerning national totals, which ended 2024 with an initial count of 880 cases.
